Prostate Cancer Treatment Q & A
What is prostate cancer?
Prostate cancer affects your prostate gland, the small gland beneath your bladder. Your prostate is around the size of a walnut in early adulthood. As you age, the prostate gland grows larger, and your risk for prostate cancer rises as well.
Untreated prostate cancer may spread beyond your prostate, but in most cases, it’s diagnosed early enough to prevent that. At Family Urology Associates, Dr. Haseeb offers all types of prostate cancer treatments from active surveillance to surgery.
Do I have symptoms of prostate cancer?
Prostate cancer is generally very slow-growing, and it rarely causes symptoms in the early stages. Because of this, prostate cancer screening is particularly important for men aged 40-50. Dr. Haseeb can recommend the ideal time to start screening based on your risk factors.
If your prostate cancer is advanced enough to cause symptoms, you may experience:
- Pain in your lower pelvis, back, hips, or thigh area
- Increased frequency of urination
- Burning during urination
- Weak urine flow
- Difficulty starting to urinate
- Hematuria (blood in the urine)
- Pain during ejaculation
- Poor appetite
- Unintended weight loss
Severe bone pain, a sign that the cancer has moved into the bones, may be a symptom of late-stage prostate cancer.
How does prostate cancer treatment work?
As a fellowship-trained urologic oncologist, Dr. Haseeb has an extensive background in prostate cancer treatment. He understands how to tailor prostate cancer treatment for your pathology, and is always mindful of your needs.
For cases of nonaggressive prostate cancer, Dr. Haseeb strongly advocates active surveillance. This essentially means that Dr. Haseeb closely monitors your health and recommends treatment only if you really need it. He uses both PSA as well as prostate MRI to stratify patients on active surveillance.
More than 50% of men have cancerous cells by age 80 — and most of those cancers never cause problems, so the active surveillance approach makes sense for many patients.
If your prostate cancer is aggressive, Dr. Haseeb can perform robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy, a minimally invasive procedure to remove your prostate gland and surrounding tissues.
Brachytherapy is a radiation-based prostate cancer treatment option in which the radioactive material is inside your body. Dr. Haseeb performs this treatment in a multidisciplinary fashion, consulting with a radiation oncologist.
Dr. Haseeb also offers the latest medication options for prostate cancer.
